Bridge on I-20 closed for emergency repairs, SCDOT says

CAMDEN, S.C. (WIS) – The westbound bridge on Interstate 20 over the Wateree River is shut down.

The South Carolina Division of Transportation (SCDOT) closed the bridge early Thursday afternoon and staff are presently on the bridge making emergency repairs.

“They are going to be out [there] till the repairs are executed,” SCDOT Strategic Communications Director Ginny Jones stated. “At that time we can reopen it.”

A spokesperson from SCDOT instructed WIS Information 10 they observed the bridge was settling close to the bridge deck.

After making this discovery, inspectors went out to find out if the bridge wanted repairs.

They determined after inspection the freeway wanted to be closed for emergency repairs.

Crews are working across the clock to make these repairs to allow them to reopen the westbound facet of the bridge, SCDOT stated.

“We all know it’s an inconvenience presently, however we wish our roads to be secure,” Jones stated. “We would like of us to be secure once they journey on our roads so we respect their endurance.”

Jones added they plan to have the bridge mounted by Thursday.
